Key terms

Convergence of Technology -
Technological convergence is the tendency for different technological systems to evolve towards performing similar tasks

Industry convergence –
the merger of hitherto separate industries

Synergy-
Synergy is created when things work in concert together to create an outcome that is in some way of more value than the total of what the individual inputs is.

Conglomerate -
A corporation consisting of several companies in different businesses

Globalisation -
Name for the process of increasing the connectivity and interdependence of the world's markets and businesses.

Analogue Music -
Music that can't be shared as easy e.g. Vinyl Records.

Digitalization -
The process of converting information into a digital format.

Vertical Integration -
The combination in one company of two or more stages of production normally operated by separate companies.

Horizontal Intergration -
The merger of companies at the same stage of production in the same or different industries.

Major Record Label -
Major labels are large music production corporations often owned by a parent company.

Subsidiary Label -
A record label that is owned by a bigger label e.g. Sony owning Arista Records.

Independant Label -
A independant Label is a music company that isn't owned by a big corporation e.g. Stones Throw Label.

Niche Audience -
A Niche Audience is a small group of people that like the same thing
e.g. a fan club of a band

Mainstream Audience -
the generalpubilic or commercial audience

Fans -
The people that like/love a certain things e.g. fans a of a singer

Active Audience -
Audience members who already are interested in an organization, issue, or cause.

Audiophiles -
A person having an ardent interest in stereo or high- fidelity sound reproduction.

Early Adopters -
An early adopter is a person who embraces new technology before most other people do.

Consuption -
The process in which the substance of a thing is completely destroyed, used up, or incorporated or transformed into something else.

Web 2.0 -
the internet viewed as a medium in which interactive experience, in the form of blogs, wikis, forums, etc.

meta tags/ personalization -
Meta elements are HTML or XHTML elements used to provide structured metadata about a Web page.

Download -
Copy (data) from one computer system to another or to a disk


Streaming-
Streaming technology is used to transfer data over the Internet in a continues stream


Peer to peer -
Peer-to-peer is a communications model in which each party has the same capabilities and either party can initiate a communication session.

Piracy -
A similar act of robbery, as the hijacking of an airplane. The unauthorized use or reproduction of copyrighted or patented material.

Portability/ miniturazation -
The act of making something smaller to fit into something.

Multi-track -
Having, using, or produced with multiple recording tracks.

Sampling -
The taking of a sample or samples e.g. someone elses song for your own

Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) -
is an electronic system designed solely or primarily for recording, editing and playing back digital audio.

A&R Artist and Repitoir -
Artists and repertoire (A&R) is the division of a record label that is responsible for talent scouting and overseeing the artistic development of recording artists. It also acts as a liaison between artists and the record label.


Record Deal Contract Royalties
A record deal is the act of a record label taking on another artist
A contract is what the Artist/band has to sign to be able to record their music and have it distributed
Royalties are what the artist/band get for when a company or person wants to play their music.

Distribution -
1.The action of sharing something out among a number of recipients.
2.The way in which something is shared out among a group or spread over an area.

Plugging/ Marketing -
In the fast-moving world of business, definitions rarely stay the same.
